“Gondwana” means “the Forest of the Gonds.” The Austrian geologist Eduard Suess named the ancient southern supercontinent in 1885 after a region of India, because the same Glossopteris plant fossils turn up across India, Africa, South America, Antarctica, and Australia — proof that they were once joined.
The name Gondwana, for the ancient supercontinent, was first used by the Austrian geologist Eduard Suess in 1885, while he was studying plant fossils from the Gondwana region of India. That region is named after the Gond people, one of the largest tribal communities in India. The name combines Gond with the Sanskrit word for forest, vana — so Gondwana means “the Forest of the Gonds.”
Suess was studying fossils of a plant called Glossopteris, which lived roughly 250–300 million years ago. He noticed remarkable similarities between Glossopteris fossils from Gondwana in India and those found in Africa and South America, and proposed that these lands must once have been connected by a land bridge. He named this ancient southern landmass Gondwanaland, after the Gondwana region of India.
About 50 years later, geologists discovered that continents go through a cycle of breaking apart and rejoining, known as the supercontinent cycle. During one such cycle, about 300 million years ago, India, Africa, South America, Antarctica, and Australia formed the southern half of the supercontinent Pangaea. Geologists kept Suess’s name, Gondwana, for this southern part.
Glossopteris — the plant that proved it
Glossopteris was one of the dominant plant groups of Gondwana during the Permian Period, about 250–300 million years ago. It is among the most common plant fossils of that period across India, Africa, South America, Antarctica, and Australia — a shared record of their history as parts of one supercontinent.
Why India’s coal is “Gondwana coal”
Gondwana’s climate supported vast, cool, waterlogged swamps where Glossopteris and many other plants thrived. Over millions of years, the buried organic matter turned into coal. Today about 98% of India’s coal reserves are Gondwana coal, formed when India was part of the supercontinent during the Permian.
