The only active volcano in South Asia — a smoking island rising from a subduction zone in the Andaman Sea.

Barren Island is the only confirmed active volcano in South Asia. It sits along the volcanic arc of the Andaman subduction zone, where the Indian plate slides beneath the Burma plate and melts at depth, feeding magma to the surface.

The volcano has erupted repeatedly in recent decades, building and reshaping its cone. As an active volcano rising straight out of the sea in Indian territory, it is a rare, living window onto the same subduction machinery that shapes island arcs around the world.
